What is Radon?

Radon gas is an odorless, tasteless, and invisible radioactive gas released into the ground as a result of uranium decay. It is the second leading cause of lung cancer, after smoking. The HT Inspection Service is certified as an Environmental Laboratory by the State of New York and listed with the EPA. We use a femto-Tech Model-510 Continuous Radon Monitor, an EPA approved device. As a certified Environmental Laboratory The HT Inspection Service is able to provide the results of the test immediately.

This excerpt is taken from the EPA web site.

Everyone should test their homes for one of the leading causes of lung cancer in the country: indoor radon gas. In some areas of the country, as many as one out of two homes has high levels of radon. Radon levels can soar during the colder months when residents keep windows and doors closed and spend more time indoors.  "Twenty-two thousand people die from lung cancer each year in the United States from exposure to indoor radon", Whitman said. "Yet Americans could help prevent these deaths and protect their families by testing their homes for radon as soon as possible."

Based on information contained in the National Academy of Sciences report, The Health Effects of Exposure to Indoor Radon, radon is estimated to cause between 15,000 and 22,000 lung cancer deaths per year.  Data on (non-radon) causes of death are from Injury Facts, 1999 Edition, National Safety Council, Itasca, IL

According to the
New York State Department of Health, certain areas of the state are at higher risk for Radon.

From NY State Dept of Health:

If you live in one of 37 New York counties that have been designated as high radon risk areas by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and New York State. Many of your neighbors have already tested their homes for radon. A large percentage of their test results indicate radon levels above EPA's recommended level for taking remedial action. If you haven't tested your home for radon, do it now.  Below are the listed Counties at Risk for Radon:
